Statistical exploration of deep-brain geometry during DBS
During the implantation surgery for the DBS electrodes, the surgeons routinely explore different locations with electric stimulation, before selecting the most favorable one in order to reduce the patient's symptoms. In this starting project, we will browse our large database of operated patients and look for a statistical link between two distinct features:
- The geometry of each patient's deep brain structures (as contoured by the neurosurgeon during planning).
- The symptomatic effects of electrical stimulation in different locations (assessed during the surgery).
The results may provide novel insights into the functioning principles of DBS, while helping neurosurgeons select the most promising targets for stimulation at the time of surgical planning.
